Re: Altec Diaphragm on Ebay
For sure, they're a huge step up from the 806 which is around 60% weaker, so has considerably less horn gain, ergo faster HF roll-off. Fine for the vinyl, tape, prosound apps it was designed for, but in today's 'techno speak', not digitally ready.
Anyway, my SWAG based on a few things including various Altec and private measurements indicates that GPA's 34647 is probably every bit the = to the 23744 plus with more power handling/durability.
Of more interest to me is GPA's claim that the high power 26420 has excellent HF performance also (though not on a par with the 34647) since I haven't seen any measurements of it, so gambling that the one's Santa left on my stoop recently will perform at least as good as a vintage 20275 ('heavy') aluminum, the 'sound' I grew up with, so to speak.
Until I get the burned up 23744s out though, don't have a clue about any obvious difference beyond the fact that the VC mounting/terminal wiring is much more robust to the point of being slightly sloppy (just an observation ATM), so as I mentioned earlier, I wonder if much (all?) of the 23744's mystique/fragility isn't due to its assembly.

12"+ here so was doing plenty of digging. But also waiting to get my woofers back from GPA, should be soon. One other thing GM I asked Bill about doing a full diagnostics on them before sending them back a long with the T/S parameters told him not to send back until they are near factory spec.I told Bill that I will test and measure them when I get them back it will help me determine if I'm doing accurate measurements with my gear.
I just wanted to make sure! With the shipping charges being twice as much as the re-mag costs can't afford to make mistakes. :2thumbsup:
Re: Altec Diaphragm on Ebay
Understood.
I forget, how do you measure T/S? Vas in particular can be tough to get right consistently.

The woofer tester WT3, and I did the added mass method for VAS.
Re: Altec Diaphragm on Ebay
Well, the 23744 ended up selling to the highest bidder at $103.52. BTW, did anyone read my post #10 in this thread or did it get buried in this obscure thread? Wondering if anyone has any theories as to why GPA doesn't offer the 23744 when they offer so many other (less well known/less sought after?) diaphragms. I offered up a few theories--wondering if any of them are on the money?
